Design All Jemalicious jewellery is designed by us. We dont pinch other people's designs, so please dont pinch ours. Usually Jo, our buyer and one of our directors, stumbles across a gemstone that catches her eye and she just cant resist buying it. This means it ends up in the workshop sitting and waiting for someone to be inspired. Sometimes that happens straight away, but it has been known to take months! Not that we dont get inspiration, its just that we're not happy with just anything, its got to be good! If its a special stone, it has to be incorporated into a special piece. Other times, an idea will come out of conversations we have had with customers - for example we've had conversations this summer along the lines of: "I really wanted something more chunky", "What about something for the man in my life?", "I really love your chains, they're so striking", and we came back and sat down to design some more chunky, heavyweight, striking chains that the guys as well as girls could wear. Currently these are only in the design phase, but we hope to have some of them made and up on the website this autumn. Manufacture All Jemalicious jewellery is made by us, here in the UK. We start off with the raw silver or gold, in sheet or wire form, and end up with chains, clasps, pendants, earrings. Our heart link chain for example starts off as small pieces of wire, which is then shaped, soldered and filed to produce the heart and round links. We then solder each link together to produce the chain and add a handmade clasp. After soldering, the firescale is removed by pickling in acid and then the chain is polished before being sent for hallmarking. We will occassionally buy in components, usually where the cost of production would be prohibitive or where we dont have the facilities. The classic example is the fine trace chain we use for some of our pendants - making these in-house would involve a level of equipment and production-line manufacture that would take us away from the handmade ethos, so we buy them in. We use traditional forging, soldering, polishing and wire wrapping techniques in our workshop. We also use precious metal clay, a new innovation, to produce some of our designs such as the layered heart pendant, as it gives us more freedom with textures.
